Δ READING CLUB AT THE WELTKULTUREN MUSEUM: DECOLONIZATION AS HEALING?

    With Amelie Kleinhubbert (Cultural mediator)
Accompanying the exhibition "healing. Life in balance"

In the reading club "Decolonization as Healing?", texts are read and discussed together that are based on themes from the exhibition "healing. Living in balance". Colonial continuities in everyday life and how to deal with them are the focus. What role does colonialism play in the museum? How is our idea of nature colonially shaped? What can healing mean?

At this second meeting, we will read contemporary poems that deal with the consequences of colonialism and opportunities for healing. Anybody who couldn’t be there the first time is also most welcome to join now. You will receive details of the reading material when you book your place.

    Next date: 7 December

INTRODUCTION FOR EDUCATORS with Stephanie Endter (Head of Education)
    Δ INTRODUCTION FOR EDUCATORS

    with Stephanie Endter

Our world is full of colour, but do all cultures see it in the same way? While the scientific basis for perception is identical for everyone, light waves can’t really explain how we name our impressions of colour, the number (and kind) of categories we divide these colours into, or the meanings and associations we ascribe to them.

Touring the exhibition, Berit Mohr shows how perception of colour sometimes differs enormously depending on the language and culture involved.

"OBJECTS FROM THE BENIN EMPIRE IN THE COLLECTION OF THE WELTKULTUREN MUSEUM "
Talk with Audrey Peraldi (Cultural scientist)
Δ OBJECTS FROM THE BENIN EMPIRE IN THE COLLECTION OF THE WELTKULTUREN MUSEUM

Presentation with Audrey Peraldi (Cultural scientist )

The so-called "Benin Bronzes" from present-day Nigeria play a central role in the debate on the restitution of cultural property. Also in the collection of the World Cultures Museum are over 50 metal, wood and ivory objects from the Benin Empire (Nigeria). When and under what circumstances did they enter the collection of the then Ethnological Museum? A provenance research project funded by the German Center for the Loss of Cultural Property is currently being conducted at the Frankfurt museum to investigate the complex ownership relationships behind the objects.  Cultural scholar Audrey Peraldi will present biographies of personalities involved and provide insight into ongoing research using archival documents. It addresses the perception of these objects as ritual, historical, cultural, artistic, and political.
