Gabi Ngcobo, South Africa

Gabi Ngcobo is co-curator of and one of the artists showcased in the upcoming Weltkulturen Museum exhibition A LABOUR OF LOVE (Opening: 2nd December 2015).
She is using her residence at the museum’s lab to critically engage with and review the museum’s collection of contemporary South African art.

Gabi Ngcobo is a curator and artist based in Johannesburg who is involved in exhibition projects in Africa, Europe and North and South America. Currently she is co-curator of the 32nd Bienal de São Paulo.

As a founding member and creative director of the Center for Historical Reenactments, an independent collective platform in Johannesburg, in 2010 she curated PASS-AGES: references & footnotes and took part in Xenoglossia, a research project. In addition to several group shows and monographic exhibitions, Ngcobo curated DON’T/PANIC, an exhibition shown parallel to the 17th Climate Summit in Durban in 2011.

Ngcobo was the first appointee of the POOL Curatorial Fellowship run by the LUMA foundation, with her exhibition some a little sooner, some a little later appearing at the POOL/LUMA Westbau space in Zurich in 2013. Gabi Ngcobo graduated from the Center for Curatorial Studies at New York’s Bard College in 2009 and is today a lecturer at the Wits School of Arts in Johannesburg. Her experience spans roles as assistant curator at the Iziko South African National Gallery in

Cape Town and as head of research for the Cape Africa Platform. Ngcobo is co-curator of the exhibition A Labour of Love at the Weltkulturen Museum.
