“Souvenirs from the world of the spirits.Ticuna barkclothpaintings as 'Amazonian Airport Art'”
With Arno Holl (ethnologist, research assistant)

The Ticuna barkc1oth paintings are among the best-known examples of in digenous art in Brazil. Not only are these paintings quite popular with tourists, they are also produced es pecially for the tourist market. Yet rather than showing only romantic images of an idyllic nature, some motifs have a more profound meaning. This tourist art is inspired by a repertoire of mythical animals and in particular the female initiation ceremony, the most important fes tival of the Ticuna ritual complex. The presentation explores this re lationship using examples from the Weltkulturen Museums collection.
