    WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS
    “Hearing the sound of silence”
Workshop led by Martin Brüger, meditation trainer and artist
    Δ WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS

    "Hearing the sound of silence”
With Martin Brüger (meditation trainer and artist)

Sound and silence aren’t just opposites, they are the two indivisible extremes of hearing, because silence can only be experienced via sound and vice versa. In this guided meditative workshop connected with the exhibition “SOUND SOURCES. Everything Is Music”, we will find out about various meditative exercises that sharpen our sense of hearing and let us develop an awareness of hearing as a process that ultimately takes place in our consciousness rather than in our ears. The exercises presented here will offer the participants a whole new dimension of experience that extends from meditatively listening to self-made and external sounds through to chilling in the power of audio silence. And sound, of course, is also a means of communication: after a phase of meditative sensitisation to sound and silence we will round off the evening with a communal sound/silence performance. Nobody needs musical skills for this workshop; it is much more about being open to insights about hearing processes, and being eager to find out about a more sensitive perception of ourselves and our surroundings.

    Δ *** FULLY BOOKED*** Gamelan-Workshop

With: Frank Purwanto und Heri Djajasumadi

Gamelan orchestras are an important aspect of Javanese and Balinese court cultures, but there are also smaller ensembles in the villages. While the metallophones play the melody, the gongs are responsible for the rhythm. The group is conducted by predefined combinations of drum beats which determine the speed or volume. Gamelan orchestras can play on their own or as an accompaniment to dancing or shadow puppetry. There are also smaller gong ensembles on other Indonesian islands, but the Javanese or Balinese gamelan is the most well known by far.

As part of the "Sound Sources" exhibition, the gamelan orchestra Wacana Budaya regularly offers workshops in the exhibition. Wacana Budaya from Frankfurt Höchst was founded in 1984. During the workshop, you will play on instruments from the museum collection on the upper floor of the exhibition.
