POETIC PERFORMANCE
‘Exploring the museum depot through film and poetry’
Film discussion
With Alma Simba (historian and poet)
Using film and poetry, the event explores how everyone can better understand and process the enduring legacy of colonialism between Africa and Europe, particularly as it relates to the debates around restitution. Historian and poet Alma Simba also seeks to highlight the role of culture and media. The group discusses how important it is to know this history. How can the conflict-ridden history of European museum collections - which include African cultural belongings - and the multi-layered notion of restitution be addressed? She will share films, including archival historical footage and explainer videos by Open Restitution Africa, to explore colonial expeditions and practices, focusing on Tanzania and how thousands of cultural belongings and ancestral human remains - like those from the Isanzu community - found their way into European museum collections.
