Bernhard Hagen (1853–1919): From tropical medicine specialist to racial researcher – A story of interconnection between Sumatra, New Guinea and Frankfurt

The lecture sheds light on the transimperial career of physician and anthropologist Bernhard Hagen, who founded the Ethnological Museum in Frankfurt (today: Weltkulturen Museum) after working for over ten years as a tropical doctor in the Dutch East Indies and German New Guinea. His biography shows how colonial medicine, racial research and scientific networks in ‘foreign’ colonies shaped the museum's development.
