SHEROES. Comic Art from Africa
The exhibition "SHEROES. Comic Art from Africa" provides an insight into Africa's diverse comic scene. A growing group of young creatives from the African continent tell stories of (pre-colonial) history in their works, draw on cultural myths and symbols, and address social and ecological challenges. Through their comics, they bring their voices, experiences and demands to global society. They address the important issues of our time and create new visions of the future.
SHEROES focuses on female protagonists and female perspectives: supersheroes who fight environmental disasters with local deities; a young woman who masters her urban everyday life; protagonists who defend LGBTQ+ rights; a storyteller who advocates for the democratic distribution of knowledge.
With their works, the comic book creators challenge the status quo of the international art and culture scene, where female perspectives from the Global South are still marginalised.
The exhibition also includes a cosy reading room that invites visitors to browse and discover more comics. The reading room can be visited during opening hours even without an exhibition ticket.
