***CANCELLED***CURATORS' GUIDED TOUR

The sound of the South Pacific
For the exhibition “Sound sources. Everything is Music!”
With Matthias Claudius Hofmann (curator of the Oceania collection)

Sounds shape our everyday lives, and even at the stillest of moments they can be heard all around us. Each and every place has its own specific soundscape. Even the geocultural region of Oceania, or the Pacific, is a ‘quiet’ ocean, according to its name.

Whether it’s bark beaters, water drums, shark rattles or kaneka pop music, exploring the sound of the South Pacific allows us to gain a fascinating glimpse of the culture and worldview of societies in Oceania.

In this tour, Matthias Claudius Hofmann highlights the themes of the exhibition by looking at selected examples of exhibits from the Oceania collection and provides some in-depth insights into the culturally determined meanings of sounds in the South Pacific.
