SHEROES. Comic Art from Africa
The exhibition “SHEROES. Comic Art from Africa” provides insights into Africa’s diverse comic scene. A growing group of young creatives from the African continent will be talking about (pre-colonial) history in their works, drawing on cultural myths and symbols and addressing social and ecological challenges. Their comics enable them to contribute their voices, experiences and demands to global society, addressing the key issues of our time and creating new visions of the future.
SHEROES focuses on female protagonists and female perspectives: superheroines who fight against environmental disasters with local deities; a young woman who masters her everyday urban life; protagonists who defend LGBTQ rights; a storyteller who advocates for the democratic distribution of knowledge.
Through their works, these comic creators are challenging the status quo in the international art and culture scene, where female perspectives from the Global South are still marginalised.
