    With Severine Meier

People have always been on the move, all around the world. As they move, they also take with them their lifestyles, language, music, and arts and crafts. Much of what is reputedly ‘authentic’ for a culture turns out, at second glance, to be an ‘import’.

Starting from its own collections, the Weltkulturen Museum raises associative questions highlighting how the world’s diversity of cultures has always existed in a process of exchange. From historical settlement movements, labour migration or globalisation – people and their diverse cultures have always been in a process of constant exchange. Is migration really only a reaction to or a cause of problems – or far more a key driver for new forms of community in a constantly changing world?

Severine Meier leads through the exhibition and gives insights into it's developement.

    Δ ZOOM-LECTURE

    “Buddhist Worlds of Colour”

With Eric Huntington, Postdoctoral Fellow for Buddhist Studies at the Chao Center for Asian Studies, Rice University in Houston

Online lecture as part of the TARI Seminar Series at Rice University, Houston, Texas

In Buddhism, colours are associated with numerous meanings which can in some cases vary widely. They form the basis for meditations, and indicate the points of the compass, moods and characteristics. Buddha Śākyamuni, for example – who is also known as Siddhārtha or Gautama – is often depicted with golden skin in order to emphasise how unique he is in the world. Virūpākṣa, the guardian of the western side of the mythical mountain Sumeru, is shown with a red face because the mountain is also supposed to be red in his western quadrant.

In this online seminar, Eric Huntington, Postdoctoral Fellow for Buddhist Studies at the Chao Center for Asian Studies, Rice University in Houston, gives an introduction to the complex system of colours in Buddhism. The seminar also looks ahead to the upcoming exhibition GREEN SKY, BLUE GRASS at the Weltkulturen Museum (opening 1.4.2021).

Both the exhibition and the accompanying book of the same name explore colours, colour schemes and their culturally determined meanings. Eric Huntington is one of thirteen authors of this comprehensive publication.
