    Δ MORNING-EVENING CONVERSATION (ONLINE)

    10am Frankfurt, 8 pm Auckland

with the artist Ema Tavola and the curators of the exhibition “HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. From Being Rendered Invisible and Becoming Visible” Julia Albrecht and Stephanie Endter

Ema Tavola speaks about her work Embodied Decolonisation which she produced for the exhibition “HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. From Being Rendered Invisible and Becoming Visible”. Tavola is a Fijian-Pākehā artist-curator based in South Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand.

With her series of photographic documentation shown in Frankfurt she was interested in the approach of autoethnography as a mode of decentering the colonial tropes of ethnographic representation by prioritising her experience as a Melanesian woman over outsider perspectives.

In our conversation she will outline some background to Fijian female tattoo practice, the Melanesian tattoo artist who marked her, Julia Mage’au Gray, and the ways in which Melanesian female tattoo has become a practice of embodied decolonisation. Tavola is an independent gallerist and will also share some insights to her latest project situating her gallery, Vunilagi Vou, within The Alexander Café as a space dedicated to exploring the potential of contemporary Pacific art, artists and audiences through curatorial projects, community engagement and creative events.

The Zoom talk will be held in English. Please use this Zoom link to watch the conversation:

Our world is full of colour, but do all cultures see it in the same way? While the scientific basis for perception is identical for everyone, light waves can’t really explain how we name our impressions of colour, the number (and kind) of categories we divide these colours into, or the meanings and associations we ascribe to them.

Touring the exhibition Iris Loew shows how perception of colour sometimes differs enormously depending on the language and culture involved.

    Δ “RED IN FOCUS”

Theme related guided tour with Oliver Hahn (research assistent Oceania collection)

In many cultures, the colour red plays a significant role in the way people see the world, whether it is painted on their bodies for beautification and protection, or serves as a sacred colour, or features in the material culture. Consequently, it is a colour that also appears in many different sections of the exhibition “GREEN SKY, BLUE GRASS. Colour Coding Worlds”.

Oliver Hahn guides through the exhibiton. He investigates the meaning of red as a colour in various cultures by looking at case studies from the Amazon region, New Guinea and Polynesia.

Please register via the booking button “TERMIN BUCHEN”. The number of participants is limited to ten people.

We are delighted to invite yout to the opening of the exhibition “In Plain Sight. #ichbinsichtbar".

“In Plain Sight. #ichbinsichtbar" is a guest exhibition by Kosmos e.V. at the Weltkulturen Labor accompanying the exhibition "HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. From Being Rendered Invisible and Becoming Visible“. In portraits and statements, young people talk about their very different realities of life, their experiences with racism and discrimination, their wishes and demands on society and political leaders.

The aim of this exhibition is to draw attention to the lack of representation of young people by creating a space for them to make their voices heard and as a result become more visible.

    LIVE WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN
“Sky Blue, Crocodile Green, Lemon Yellow
with a tour of the exhibition “GREEN SKY, BLUE GRASS. Colour Coding Worlds”
    Δ LIVE WORKSHOP FOR CHILDREN

“Sky Blue, Crocodile Green, Lemon Yellow”

The world of colours is truly thrilling. What colours are there and where do we find them? In nature we come across colours wherever we look: in plants, in the animal kingdom, and in rocks and minerals. Berries dye our hands red or blue. Colours can also be seen in many different combinations on animals: for example on a butterfly’s wings, the feathers of birds, and the skin and fur of various creatures.

How do colours smell? Can we taste them? First of all we will discover the colours in the exhibition “GREEN SKY, BLUE GRASS. Colour Coding Worlds”. After that we will produce our own colours from natural materials.

For children from 6 years old.
