∇ CURATOR'S COMBINATION TOUR
“The Making-of THE COMMON THREAD and AND THE BEAT GOES ON…”
With Vanessa von Gliszczynski (ethnologist and curator South East Asia) and Matthias Claudius Hofmann (ethnologist, research assistant)Δ CURATOR'S COMBINATION TOUR“The Making-of THE COMMON THREAD and AND THE BEAT GOES ON…”
With Vanessa von Gliszczynski (ethnologist and curator South East Asia) and Matthias Claudius Hofmann (ethnologist, research assistant)Threads, materials and patterns are taken for granted as a natural part of our daily life. Around the world, textile ideas and terms shape our language, narratives, stories and myths. The making of textiles stimulates our spatial and mathematical thinking. The curators of the exhibition introduce the concept and structure of the exhibition THE COMMON THREAD and give insight into the culturally multifaceted techniques of textile production.
In the second part of the curators combination tour the main theme is the exhibition AND THE BEAT GOES ON… as a spin-off to the COMMON THREAD. The curators offer a deeper insight into the development process of the exhibition as well as the production and cultural meanings of the exhibited barkcloth fabrics and discuss the common musicality of woven textiles and rhythmically beaten bark.Further information about the exhibition AND THE BEAT GOES ON... here.

WELTKULTUREN ON TOUR - A LABOUR OF LOVE
An exhibition on the Weltkulturen Museum’s contemporary art collection from South Africa. The exhibition is travelling to Johannesburg Art Gallery, South Africa after a run in Frankfurt in 2015 – 2016.
The exhibition A LABOUR OF LOVE focuses on a key part of the contemporary art collection of the Weltkulturen Museum, Frankfurt on the Main, Germany - 600 works from South Africa which the museum acquired in 1986. These works were all produced by black artists including internationally renowned figures such as Peter Clarke, Lionel Davis, David Koloane, Charles Sokhaya Nkosi and Sam Nhlengethwa.
A LABOUR OF LOVE comes 28 years after the first exhibition of this collection was held in Frankfurt. It re-examines a selection of these works inspired by very different readings of the idea of love – from interpersonal relations to the passion and commitment which influenced both the creation of the works and the history of the collection’s acquisition. At the Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) the exhibition will at certain moments be in conversation with works from the JAG collection, some which were created by artists whose works form part of the collection at the Weltkulturen Museum.
The exhibition also integrates a contemporary perspective on this special collection through new works produced by former students of WSOA in response to the collection and its specific history. This perspective is further expanded by works created by Sam Nhlengethwa during a residency at the Weltkulturen Museum in July 2015. The exhibition is travelling to South Africa after a run in Frankfurt in 2015 – 2016.
The exhibition is curated by Gabi Ngcobo (curator, artist, educator at the Wits School of Arts Johannesburg and curator of the 10th Berlin Biennial) and Dr. Yvette Mutumba (founder, editor-in-chief, Contemporary And (C&), curatorial team of the 10th Berlin Biennial).
The accompanying publication not only includes new articles by Yvette Mutumba, Gabi Ngcobo, Ciraj Rassool, Same Mdluli and Neo Muyanga, but also interviews with, among others, David Koloane, Peter Clarke, Bongi Dhlomo-Mautloa, Charles Nkosi, and Lionel Davis. In addition, it contains unique archival material as well as numerous images of works from the museum’s collection and new productions. Published in German and English by Kerber Verlag.
Participating artists will be in attendance.

“Souvenirs from the world of the spirits.Ticuna barkclothpaintings as 'Amazonian Airport Art'”
With Arno Holl (ethnologist, research assistant)The Ticuna barkc1oth paintings are among the best-known examples of in digenous art in Brazil. Not only are these paintings quite popular with tourists, they are also produced es pecially for the tourist market. Yet rather than showing only romantic images of an idyllic nature, some motifs have a more profound meaning. This tourist art is inspired by a repertoire of mythical animals and in particular the female initiation ceremony, the most important fes tival of the Ticuna ritual complex. The presentation explores this re lationship using examples from the Weltkulturen Museums collection.
