    Δ MORNING-EVENING CONVERSATION (ONLINE)

    10am Frankfurt, 8 pm Auckland

with the artist Ema Tavola and the curators of the exhibition “HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. From Being Rendered Invisible and Becoming Visible” Julia Albrecht and Stephanie Endter

Ema Tavola speaks about her work Embodied Decolonisation which she produced for the exhibition “HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. From Being Rendered Invisible and Becoming Visible”. Tavola is a Fijian-Pākehā artist-curator based in South Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand.

With her series of photographic documentation shown in Frankfurt she was interested in the approach of autoethnography as a mode of decentering the colonial tropes of ethnographic representation by prioritising her experience as a Melanesian woman over outsider perspectives.

In our conversation she will outline some background to Fijian female tattoo practice, the Melanesian tattoo artist who marked her, Julia Mage’au Gray, and the ways in which Melanesian female tattoo has become a practice of embodied decolonisation. Tavola is an independent gallerist and will also share some insights to her latest project situating her gallery, Vunilagi Vou, within The Alexander Café as a space dedicated to exploring the potential of contemporary Pacific art, artists and audiences through curatorial projects, community engagement and creative events.

The Zoom talk will be held in English. Please use this Zoom link to watch the conversation:

“In Plain Sight. #ichbinsichtbar" is a guest exhibition by Kosmos e.V. at the Weltkulturen Labor accompanying the exhibition "HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT. From Being Rendered Invisible and Becoming Visible“. In portraits and statements, young people talk about their very different realities of life, their experiences with racism and discrimination, their wishes and demands on society and political leaders.

The aim of this exhibition is to draw attention to the lack of representation of young people by creating a space for them to make their voices heard and as a result become more visible.
