”The ethics of collecting

With Eva Ch. Raabe (Acting Director)

According to the International Council of Museums, collecting is one of a museum’s core tasks. As an institution conserving historical and authentic cultural objects, a museum provides public access to tangible and intangible heritage. Yet collecting covers a very diverse range of activities. Especially in an ethnological museum, the scientific and ethical principles underpinning these activities need to be constantly reviewed and discussed. This lecture takes a number of examples to illustrate collecting practices from colonial contexts to the acquisition of objects during today’s anthropological field research.
